New york: UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres on Thursday issued a strong condemnation of the attack carried out by Israeli settlers against a mosque in the occupied West Bank.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, UN spokesperson St©phane Dujarric communicated Guterres' condemnation, highlighting the unacceptable nature of violence and blasphemy targeting religious sites. Dujarric emphasized the need for such locations to be respected and protected at all times.
Guterres also addressed the broader issue of increasing violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their properties in the occupied West Bank. He highlighted the dangerous pattern of extremist violence that these incidents represent, urging an immediate halt to such actions.
Dujarric further noted that Israel, as the occupying power, has a legal obligation under international law to protect the Palestinian civilian population and ensure accountability for those responsible for such attacks.
The attack comes amid a surge in violence by Israeli soldiers and settlers in the occupied West Bank since the onset of the Gaza war in October 2023. Official figures indicate that more than 1,070 Palestinians have been killed and over 10,300 injured during this period.
