Washington: The United States announced Tuesday its withdrawal from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), accusing the organization of anti-Israel bias and promoting divisive issues. Tammy Bruce, Department Spokesperson, stated that 'continued involvement in UNESCO is not in the national interest of the United States.'
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the State Department added that the withdrawal was notified due to UNESCO's support for divisive issues that conflict with U.S. foreign policy. This marks another chapter in the history of U.S. relations with UNESCO, as the decision will take effect at the end of December 2026.
Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, expressed deep regret over President Donald Trump's decision to once again withdraw the United States from UNESCO. Azoulay noted that while the announcement was anticipated, UNESCO has made preparations for this eventuality.
