Gaza: Two Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip have died in Israeli detention, according to the Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS) and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs. On Wednesday, the organizations reported the deaths of Hamad Sharif al-Asali and Ibrahim Adnan Ashour, both of whom were held in Israeli prisons.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Hamad Sharif al-Asali, a 35-year-old detainee, was apprehended from al-Shifa Hospital during the March 2024 aggression. His family was informed he was held in Ashkelon Prison, only to later receive word from another institution that he was killed. Al-Asali, a father of four, had lost all his siblings during the aggression, with only his father surviving. His mother had passed away while receiving treatment in Jerusalem and was buried in Ramallah.
Ibrahim Adnan Ashour was detained on February 14, 2024, from Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis. His family stated that he did not have any health issues prior to his detention.
The prisoners' institutions accused the Israeli authorities of not only killing the detainees but also deliberately obscuring information about their fates. They labeled the deaths of Al-Asali and Ashour as new crimes in what they described as the Israeli brutality system, which they claim has escalated since the onset of Israeli aggression.
The institutions placed full responsibility for the deaths on the Israeli authorities and called for the international human rights system to take decisive action. They urged for the leaders of the Israeli occupation to be held accountable for alleged war crimes, to impose sanctions, and to restore the fundamental role of the human rights system. The organizations criticized the perceived exceptional immunity granted to Israel by old colonial states, arguing it places the state above accountability and punishment.
