Three Palestinian Detainees from Gaza Announced Dead in Israeli Jails

Gaza: The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner's Society have announced the deaths of three Palestinian prisoners from Gaza in Israeli prisons and military camps in recent months. The deceased detainees have been identified as Taysir Saeed al-Abd Sababa, aged 60, Khamis Shukri Mar'i Ashour, aged 44, and Khalil Ahmad Khalil Haniyeh, aged 35.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Sababa family was officially informed of Taysir Sababa's death through a notification by the HaMoked human rights organization following a response from the Israeli army. The Commission and the Prisoners' Society also received separate confirmations from the Israeli army regarding the deaths of Khamis Ashour and Khalil Haniyeh.

The official responses indicated that Sababa died on December 31, 2024, two months following his arrest; Ashour passed away on February 8, 2024, just one day after his detention; and Haniyeh died on December 25, 2024, approximately a year after being arrested. Sababa was a father to nine children, Ashour was a father to six, and Haniyeh was a father to four.

The Commission and the Prisoners' Society highlighted that these three men are among many prisoners and detainees who have died in Israeli prisons since the start of the Israeli aggression. The causes of death include allegations of torture, starvation, medical neglect, sexual assault, and systematic human rights violations.

The organizations further reported that numerous Gazan detainees remain forcibly disappeared, with dozens more having been summarily executed. Images of bodies returned post-ceasefire have been cited as evidence of systematic executions by the occupation forces.

Since the beginning of the Israeli aggression, over one hundred detainees have died in Israeli custody. As of now, the identities of 84 have been disclosed, including 50 detainees from Gaza, raising the documented number of Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli custody since 1967 to 321.

Both organizations have held Israeli authorities fully responsible for the deaths, urging the international human rights community to take effective measures against Israeli leaders for alleged war crimes against the Palestinian population. They have also demanded an end to the impunity granted to Israel by international powers such as the United States, despite evidence of crimes against humanity.

The organizations assert that violations within the Israeli prison system are part of a wider campaign of extermination and slow executions. They describe this as the bloodiest phase in the history of the Palestinian prisoners' movement, with Israel allegedly attempting to legalize the execution of Palestinian prisoners.

Data reveals that a majority of detainees are held without trial, including those under administrative detention and those classified as "unlawful combatants." By the end of November 2025, approximately 3,368 individuals were held under administrative detention, and 1,205 were classified as "unlawful combatants," not including all detainees from Gaza.
