Zurich: Switzerland's Defense Minister Martin Pfister has voiced strong criticism against the United States and Israel for their recent airstrikes on Iran, asserting that such actions, alongside Iran's retaliatory measures, breach international law. According to a report by SonntagsZeitung, Pfister called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and emphasized the need to safeguard civilian populations amidst escalating tensions.
According to Anadolu Agency, Pfister highlighted the potential for Europe to become entangled in the conflict, pointing out the risks of both conventional military involvement and asymmetric warfare, such as terrorist attacks. He specifically warned of the possibility of terrorist threats within Switzerland, as well as the prospect of a refugee influx resulting from the ongoing hostilities.
Pfister downplayed the likelihood of Switzerland facing direct threats from Iranian long-range missiles but acknowledged the possibility of collateral damage. "We currently have nothing to defend against long-range attacks," he remarked, underlining the necessity for a holistic security strategy that extends beyond military readiness to include police and intelligence efforts.
Expressing concerns that threat assessments have been undervalued in recent years, Pfister noted, "Our perfected society with its prosperity is still a long way from the current conflicts... This war, as bad as it is, could also trigger a rethink in this country, which is urgently needed."
The Middle East has witnessed heightened tensions since the US and Israel initiated a significant offensive against Iran on February 28, resulting in over 1,200 fatalities, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, over 150 schoolgirls, and several senior military officials. Iran has responded with extensive strikes targeting US bases, diplomatic sites, and military personnel across the region, as well as multiple Israeli cities.
