Madrid: In a significant policy shift, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a royal decree that criminalizes arms exports to Israel, reflecting Spain's growing support for the Palestinian cause. The decree, unveiled during a press conference, marks a decisive step in Spain's foreign policy, emphasizing humanitarian assistance over military involvement in the ongoing Middle East conflict. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Prime Minister Sanchez detailed the measures Spain will undertake, including prohibiting fuel tankers supplying the Israeli army from docking at Spanish ports and closing Spanish airspace to all aircraft transporting weapons or ammunition to Israel. The new decree also closes Spanish ports to ships carrying weapons and defense systems destined for Israel, underscoring Spain's commitment to an arms embargo. Sanchez further announced increased humanitarian aid for Gaza, pledging to raise support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Re fugees (UNRWA) to 10 million euros. This move aims to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, highlighting Spain's dedication to peace efforts in the region. The Spanish government's decision to recognize the State of Palestine in May 2024 and its continued support for the Palestinian cause have been central to its foreign policy. Sanchez emphasized the stark difference between self-defense and actions that harm civilians, such as bombing hospitals and causing starvation, signaling Spain's stance on the ethical implications of military actions in the region.
