New york: Saudi Arabia reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the United Nations' role in protecting international law, supporting the Palestinian cause, and implementing relevant UN resolutions. Speaking on behalf of the Arab Group during a hearing with UN Secretary-General candidate MarĂ­a Espinosa, Saudi Arabia emphasized support for UN efforts to address global challenges and promote peace, security, and sustainable development. According to Palestine News and Information Agency, Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, stated that Arab countries look forward to collaborating with the next Secretary-General to enhance the organization's effectiveness. The discussion also delved into support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), financial challenges faced by the UN, assistance for developing countries, the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Security Council reform, and the UN80 initiative. The next UN Secretary-General is expected to be elected in 2026 and will commence a five-year term on January 1, 2027.
