Vatican City: Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, representing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, is set to participate in the funeral of Pope Francis today in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City, alongside leaders from over 150 countries.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Vatican announced last Monday the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88 at his residence in Casa Santa Marta. His health had been in decline since February 18.
Pope Francis, during his 12-year pontificate, was known for his support of the Palestinian people and their rights. He consistently advocated for the cessation of the Israeli conflict in Gaza, describing the humanitarian situation as "horrific and shameful." The Pope also called for aid to be provided to Palestinians in Gaza, emphasizing their need for peace.
The late Pope played a significant role in strengthening the relationship between Palestine and the Vatican. This began with the Vatican's recognition of the State of Palestine and the signing of a comprehensive agreement between the two entities. Pope Francis consistently expressed his support for a just peace, advocating for a two-state solution based on international legitimacy resolutions.
