President Abbas Pledges Elections Within a Year Post-War

Ramallah: President Mahmoud Abbas has reaffirmed the commitment to holding general presidential and parliamentary elections within one year following the conclusion of the ongoing war. President Abbas emphasized that no party, political force, or individual may run for office unless they adhere to the political program and international obligations of the Palestine Liberation Organization, as well as the implementation of the two-state solution, the Arab Peace Initiative, and other international resolutions.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, President Abbas extended his appreciation to the Palestinian people for their perseverance and sacrifices in the face of adversity in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. He acknowledged their efforts in confronting external pressures and systematic attempts to undermine the State of Palestine's institutions and its quest for independence and national sovereignty.

In his statement, President Abbas reiterated the commitment to continuing efforts to secure international recognition of the State of Palestine and full membership in the United Nations. He confirmed that a temporary constitution would be drafted within three months to serve as the basis for transitioning from authority to statehood. Amendments to the electoral law and related legislation would align with this temporary constitution, ensuring adherence to the established political framework.

President Abbas also directed the Palestinian government to enhance educational curricula to meet UNESCO standards, emphasizing adherence to national identity and peace values. Additionally, the State of Palestine committed to implementing Law No. (4) of 2025, restructuring social care programs to align with international standards and ensuring compliance with newly established procedures.

The statement concluded with a call for unity and responsibility to preserve the achievements and continue progressing toward the national goals of freedom, independence, and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.
