Beirut: President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, engaged in a pivotal meeting with the President of the Lebanese Republic, Joseph Aoun. The meeting, held on Wednesday, highlighted the enduring support of Lebanon towards the Palestinian cause.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, President Abbas commended Lebanon's unwavering support for the Palestinian people's legitimate rights. He acknowledged Lebanon's historical sacrifices for the Palestinian cause, from the Nakba in 1948 to contemporary challenges.
During the discussion, President Abbas emphasized that Palestinian refugees in Lebanon are temporary guests until they can return to their homeland. He affirmed that the refugee camps are under Lebanese sovereignty, advocating for the removal of weapons in these camps that fall outside of state control, as they undermine both Lebanon and the Palestinian cause. Abbas reiterated support for Lebanon in maintaining its international commitments and safeguarding its security and stability.
The meeting also focused on the historical relationship between Palestine and Lebanon, with President Abbas expressing his dedication to strengthening ties to address mutual challenges. Both leaders explored issues concerning the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and the importance of ensuring their dignified livelihood under Lebanese law until their anticipated return to an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
President Abbas updated President Aoun on the current situation in Palestinian territories, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized the necessity of ending hostilities, allowing humanitarian aid, and pursuing a political process aimed at a two-state solution, as outlined by international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Furthermore, President Abbas highlighted the need for the State of Palestine to manage its civil and security responsibilities in Gaza, ensuring that weapons remain solely with the state. He reiterated the integral status of Gaza within Palestinian territories and the importance of unifying Palestinian ranks under the Palestine Liberation Organization's leadership.
President Abbas's visit to Beirut marks the first by an Arab leader since President Joseph Aoun's election. During his three-day official visit, Abbas is also expected to meet with other prominent Lebanese leaders, including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
