Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas received Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Matsumoto Hisashi on Thursday at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the President welcomed the Japanese delegation, led by the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, and extended his greetings to Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The meeting underscored Japan's commitment to peace initiatives, including the two-state solution and efforts to address the conflict in Gaza by facilitating humanitarian aid and opposing colonial violence.
President Abbas acknowledged Japan's humanitarian support for the Gaza Strip, its backing for UNRWA, and its contributions to building Palestinian institutions and economy. He highlighted Japan's involvement in initiatives like the Corridor for Peace and Prosperity and the CEPAD Group, which aim to bolster Palestinian state institutions.
The President stressed the importance of strengthening the relationship and cooperation between Palestine and Japan. He reiterated the Palestinian stance on achieving an immediate and permanent ceasefire, expediting humanitarian aid, and releasing hostages. Abbas emphasized the need for Palestine to assume full civil and security functions in Gaza and for all factions to surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority, advocating for a singular legal and military system.
Abbas expressed his vision for a non-militarized state and emphasized the necessity of a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, initiating reconstruction, and holding general elections within a year. He also called for a comprehensive ceasefire in the West Bank, cessation of settlement activities, and protection of religious sites.
The President lauded Japan's role in the International Peace Conference in New York and urged Japan to recognize the State of Palestine, aligning with its support for the two-state solution. He highlighted Japan's significant role in promoting peace and stability in the region and globally, underscoring its friendship with both Palestinians and Israelis.
