Ramallah: President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine announced that the convening of the eighth General Conference of the Fatah Movement marks a critical juncture in reassessing the Palestinian path and formulating a comprehensive national vision for future endeavors. This initiative aims to fortify the resilience of the Palestinian people, bolster reconstruction efforts, and carve out a genuine political pathway to terminate the occupation.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency, during his address at the conference's opening session at the Ahmed Shuqairi Hall in Ramallah, President Abbas emphasized the significance of the conference, held on Palestinian territory with participation from Gaza, Cairo, and Beirut through video links. He highlighted the conference's role in reaffirming Fatah's commitment to democratic processes and the empowerment of youth and women in leadership roles.
President Abbas reiterated Fatah's fundamental role as the cornerstone of the Palestinian national project, the champion of independent decision-making, and the protector of Palestinian identity and struggle. He underscored the importance of renewing the movement's leadership to reinforce the broader national movement and enhance its achievements.
The President acknowledged the critical timing of the conference, citing the grave existential threats facing Palestinians, the aftermath of the conflict in Gaza, and ongoing violations of international law in the West Bank, including Jerusalem. He stressed the need for the humanitarian situation in Gaza to be addressed, enabling the State of Palestine to fulfill its responsibilities through its sovereign and service institutions.
The President condemned the systematic terrorism and settlement expansion in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as violations of international law. He called for international accountability measures against the Israeli government and urged the international community to protect East Jerusalem and uphold international law.
Highlighting various international efforts recognizing Palestinian rights, President Abbas expressed support for relevant UN resolutions, the New York Declaration, the Trump plan, and UN Security Council Resolution 2803. He emphasized the opportunity these frameworks present for ending the occupation and achieving a just and lasting peace.
President Abbas reaffirmed the State of Palestine's commitment to reforms, governance, transparency, and democratic processes, aligning with international partnerships and UN resolutions. He also stressed the commitment to democratic principles, political pluralism, and the inclusion of all sectors under the rule of law.
In addressing the regional context, President Abbas reiterated respect for the sovereignty and stability of states and condemned any interference in Palestinian affairs. He also addressed the Israeli public, warning that continued settlement expansion and denial of Palestinian rights will not bring peace or security.
