President Abbas and Italian Prime Minister Meloni Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Peace Efforts

Ramallah: President Mahmoud Abbas received a phone call from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Monday evening. During the conversation, President Abbas expressed his appreciation for Italy's supportive stance on key issues concerning the Gaza Strip and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, President Abbas commended Italy's commitment to ending the conflict in Gaza, opposing the full re-occupation of the Strip, and supporting a two-state solution. He praised Prime Minister Meloni for her efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and highlighted Italy's contributions, including economic and humanitarian aid to Gaza, medical treatment for wounded children in Italian hospitals, police training, and security cooperation.

President Abbas also discussed recent developments in the Palestinian territories, emphasizing the need for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages and prisoners. He advocated for the Palestinian Authority to take full civil and security responsibility in Gaza, stressing the principle of one unified system under one legitimate authority.

He reiterated the Palestinian people's desire for a peaceful state, calling for Israel's complete withdrawal, reconstruction efforts, and elections within a year. Abbas also urged for calm in the West Bank, cessation of settler activity, release of withheld tax revenues, and protection of holy sites. He acknowledged Italy's role in the International Peace Conference and the results achieved at the United Nations General Assembly, calling for further recognition of the State of Palestine.

President Abbas highlighted Italy's potential role in advancing the two-state solution, supporting Palestinian institution building, and promoting peace and security in the region. Both leaders agreed to continue their collaborative efforts for peace and to enhance relations between Palestine and Italy.
