Nicosia: President Mahmoud Abbas engaged in a phone conversation with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, to explore ways to enhance bilateral relations and address the latest developments in Palestine and other shared concerns.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency, President Abbas expressed gratitude for Cyprus' supportive political stance, humanitarian contributions, and aid to the Gaza Strip. He emphasized the priorities of maintaining the ceasefire, facilitating humanitarian aid, ensuring Israeli withdrawal, and advancing the recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. Abbas also endorsed the implementation of President Donald Trump's plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2803, underscoring the importance of preserving Palestine's sovereign and legal status in Gaza.
President Abbas highlighted the necessity of international efforts to halt settlement expansion, settler violence, and unilateral measures while securing the release of withheld Palestinian funds. He reiterated Palestine's commitment to its national reform agenda, which includes ongoing democratic processes such as local council and student elections, the Fatah conference, parliamentary elections in November, the Palestinian National Council meeting, and next year's presidential elections.
Meanwhile, President Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus' support for a two-state solution anchored in international law and emphasized the significance of fostering security, stability, and peace in the region. He commended the robust security collaboration between the authorities of both nations and extended an invitation to President Abbas for an official visit to Cyprus.
