Post: Palestinian Resident Compelled to Self-Demolish Home in Jerusalem

Jerusalem:Israeli authorities compelled a Palestinian resident of occupied Jerusalem to demolish his own home in the Silwan area, south of Al-Aqsa Mosque, on Wednesday.

According to Palestine news & Information Agency – WAFA – English, Musa al-Awar was forced by Israeli authorities to demolish his home located in the Ein al-Lawza neighborhood of Silwan. This practice is common in occupied Jerusalem, where Palestinians are often made to demolish their own homes under the pretext of lacking building permits. Those who refuse to comply face demolition through Israeli bulldozers and are charged substantial fees for the demolition process.

The Israeli municipality in Jerusalem is known to withhold building permits from Palestinians while simultaneously demolishing their homes or coercing them to carry out the demolitions themselves. This practice, According to Jerusalem Governorate, violates international laws and humanitarian principles that ensure the right to housing. The governorate describes these actions as part of systematic efforts to forcibly displace Palestinians from Jerusalem, while expanding Israeli settlements in and around the city.
