Nablus: The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate announced today that an armed assault by dozens of Israeli colonists against Palestinian journalists in Beita, south of Nablus, is being classified as a war crime. This attack is perceived as an attempt to prevent the press from documenting ongoing events in the region.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Syndicate reported that the armed colonists stormed the town, directly targeting journalists who were covering the developments. The assailants used live ammunition, physically assaulted the journalists, and attempted to destroy their equipment, with the attack being described as deliberate and coordinated.
The incident resulted in injuries to five journalists: Ranin Sawaftah, Mohammad Al-Atrash, Louay Saeed, Nasser Shtayeh, and Nael Buweitel. Medical personnel administered immediate care at the scene, with some journalists requiring further medical evaluation due to the extent of their injuries.
The Syndicate emphasized that this attack is part of a growing wave of violence against Palestinian journalists in the occupied West Bank, especially in areas experiencing increased colonist activity. They warned that journalists are being targeted to silence their coverage of land seizures, settler violence, and military operations.
The organization further stated that it has reached out to the International Federation of Journalists to seek urgent international intervention for the protection of Palestinian journalists, noting the systematic targeting in violation of international humanitarian law. Additionally, they plan to collaborate with international legal bodies to ensure accountability for the perpetrators.
