London: Palestinian ambassador to the UK Husam Zomlot welcomed on Tuesday the UK government's decision to sanction Israel's violently extremist Jewish supremacist ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Zomlot expressed approval of the sanctions through a post on X, stating that the UK Government's decision is a long-overdue and necessary step towards advancing justice and accountability. He emphasized that while these individual designations represent a significant step forward, the Israeli government, led by a Prime Minister wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, still remains free from accountability.
Zomlot further called on the UK to implement broader sanctions and a full arms embargo against the Government of Israel. He urged alignment with international and UK laws, including the ICJ Advisory Opinion of July 2024.
He concluded his remarks by stating that the announcement, though welcomed, should not replace the UK's commitments to support the self-determination of the Palestinian people. Zomlot reiterated his call for the UK government to recognize the state of Palestine at the UN in the coming week.
