Occupation Authorities Order Removal of Hundreds of Trees South of Occupied Jerusalem

Jerusalem: Israeli occupation authorities issued a notice ordering the removal of hundreds of trees in the town of Sur Baher, south of occupied Jerusalem, claiming they are located within the so-called 'buffer zone' adjacent to the separation wall. Eyewitnesses and local sources reported that the notice targets agricultural lands owned by residents of the town and includes the uprooting of hundreds of fruit-bearing trees, a move that threatens the livelihoods of several families and causes extensive environmental and agricultural damage in the area.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the decision to remove the trees has sparked concerns among local residents who rely on agriculture as a primary source of income. The trees, many of which have been cultivated for generations, provide essential produce and support the economic stability of the families involved.

The 'buffer zone' designation has been a point of contention, as it often results in significant restrictions and alterations to the land use of Palestinian residents. This latest order is expected to exacerbate tensions and add to the challenges faced by the community in maintaining their agricultural practices and sustaining their livelihoods.

Local leaders and activists are reportedly mobilizing to resist the order, emphasizing the critical role these lands and trees play in the community's economy and environment. The removal of the trees not only impacts the immediate agricultural output but also poses long-term consequences for the ecological balance and heritage of the area.
