Wellington: New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed strong criticism towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, claiming that Netanyahu has "gone too far" and "lost his mind" in relation to recent actions in the Gaza Strip. Luxon condemned the lack of humanitarian aid and the forced displacement of civilians, describing the situation as appalling. Furthermore, he emphasized that Israel's plan to attack Gaza City is completely unacceptable.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, New Zealand's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been evolving, with Foreign Minister Winston Peters announcing intentions to recognize a Palestinian state. Peters stated that Prime Minister Luxon's government plans to make a formal decision by September, with a comprehensive approach to be presented during the UN Leaders' Week.
Peters elaborated on New Zealand's independent foreign policy, acknowledging that while some of the country's close partners have already recognized a Palestinian state, New Zealand intends to evaluate the situation carefully, considering its own principles, values, and national interests. He affirmed that New Zealand's recognition of a Palestinian state is a matter of timing, rather than doubt.
