New Documentary Unveils Israeli Soldier’s Involvement in Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh’s Death

Jenin: A new documentary film titled "Who Killed Shireen?" produced by Zeteo Media has brought to light the identity of the Israeli soldier responsible for the death of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the documentary names Israeli soldier Alon Scagio, 22, as the person who killed the veteran reporter. The film further reveals that Scagio was later killed during an Israeli military operation in June 2024 in the city of Jenin, the same location where Abu Akleh was shot.

The 40-minute investigative documentary explores the shortcomings of both US and Israeli government efforts to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the 51-year-old Al Jazeera correspondent.

On May 11, while covering an Israeli army operation in the northern occupied West Bank refugee camp of Jenin, Abu Akleh, despite wearing a helmet and a clearly marked press vest, was shot in the head by an Israeli sniper. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

Abu Akleh's killing sent shockwaves among Palestinians globally. She was regarded as an iconic journalist with over 25 years of experience covering events in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Born on April 3, 1971, in East Jerusalem, Abu Akleh was a Palestinian-American journalist working with Al Jazeera. She obtained American citizenship after living in the United States.
