Berlin: A new poll has revealed that the majority of citizens in Germany now support the recognition of a Palestinian state, a move the German government currently rejects.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, in a survey by the Forsa Institute for the foreign policy journal Internationale Politik, 54% of respondents answered "Yes" to the question: "Should Germany now recognize Palestine as its own state?" Thirty-one percent opposed the idea.
Support was slightly higher in eastern Germany (59%) than in the west (53%).
The German government views the recognition of the State of Palestine as the final step at the end of a negotiated peace process toward achieving a two-state solution.
