Berlin: Prominent scientists, cultural figures, and civil society leaders in Germany have called on the government to stop sending weapons to Israel, amid the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, an open letter published Wednesday and reported by Der Spiegel featured around 50 notable personalities, including climate activist Luisa Neubauer, sociologist Harald Welzer, and musician Daniel Barenboim. The letter urged Berlin to push for an immediate ceasefire and to provide comprehensive humanitarian aid for Palestinians.
The letter criticized the German government for not upholding its international legal obligations to prevent war crimes and condemned the military tactics used by Israel. Additionally, the signatories called for empowering independent international bodies, such as the UN, to deliver aid freely to Gaza's population.
This move indicates growing public pressure on Germany to reconsider its arms exports to Israel amid ongoing violence.
