Jordan: Jordan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed UNESCO's World Heritage Committee's decision to keep the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Ministry's official spokesperson, Ambassador Fouad Majali, stated that the decision affirms the illegality and lack of legitimacy of Israeli violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites, worshippers' rights, freedom of worship, and unrestricted access to holy places. Majali highlighted interference in the authority of the Jerusalem Awqaf Administration, issues concerning Al-Aqsa Mosque, and projects and excavations affecting the cultural heritage and character of the Old City.
Majali emphasized the decision's significance in preserving the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, as well as safeguarding the city's heritage. The decision also recalled previous UNESCO resolutions expressing regret over Israel's failure to halt excavations and activities in occupied East Jerusalem and its refusal to implement UNESCO's request to appoint a permanent representative in the area. Furthermore, the decision stressed the urgent need for UNESCO's Reactive Monitoring Mission to the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls.
Majali reiterated that all Israeli measures aiming to alter the Arab, Islamic, and Christian identity of occupied Jerusalem and its historical and legal status are null, void, and illegitimate. He urged Israel, as the occupying power, to cease all violations against holy sites, which contravene international law and undermine efforts towards a two-State solution and a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO made the decision to retain the Old City of Jerusalem on the list during its 10-day 48th session, which began in Busan, the Republic of Korea, on Sunday, July 19.
