Jerusalem Patriarchates Warn Against Mass Displacement from Gaza City

Jerusalem: The Greek Orthodox and Latin Patriarchates of Jerusalem cautioned on Tuesday against the deliberate and forcible mass displacement of civilians from Gaza City.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, in a press statement, the Patriarchates highlighted the recent developments following the Israeli government's announcement to take control of Gaza City. Reports of a massive military mobilization and preparations for an offensive have been circulating, indicating an imminent threat to the civilian population, including Christians, in Gaza City.

The Patriarchates expressed grave concerns about the evacuation orders already affecting several neighborhoods and the ongoing heavy bombardment reports. They noted the Israeli government's ominous warning that 'the gates of hell will open,' suggesting that the current situation is rapidly escalating into a grim reality.

Since the outbreak of what they describe as Israeli genocidal aggression, the Greek Orthodox compound of Saint Porphyrius and the Holy Family compound have offered refuge to hundreds of civilians, including the elderly, women, and children. The Latin compound has been housing people with disabilities, cared for by the Sisters Missionaries of Charity. Many of those seeking shelter are reportedly weakened and malnourished, making the prospect of fleeing to the south perilous.

The Patriarchates emphasized that no future should be built on captivity or displacement and echoed Pope Leo XIV's recent statement on respecting the identity and rights of all peoples, especially their right to remain in their homeland. They condemned any justification for the mass displacement of civilians and urged an end to the ongoing violence.

In their statement, they called upon the international community to take decisive action to halt the conflict and facilitate the return of missing individuals and Israeli hostages, advocating for peace and the common good of all people affected by the conflict.
