Salem:An Israeli military court has sentenced Palestinian prisoner Nazmi Abu Bakr to life imprisonment and ordered him to pay 4.5 million shekels as 'compensation'. The court ruling was issued nearly six years after Abu Bakr's arrest.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, Khaled Mahajneh, a lawyer with the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, reported that the sentence came after 85 court hearings. This brings the total number of Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons to 119.
The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner's Society stated that Abu Bakr was subjected to interrogation and torture at the al-Jalameh detention center, denied access to legal counsel during the initial interrogation phase, and placed in solitary confinement. They noted that Abu Bakr has consistently denied the charge against him.
The organizations argue that Abu Bakr's case underscores a lack of fair-trial guarantees in Israeli military courts, calling for the dismantling of the military court system and accountability for alleged violations against Palestinian prisoners.
