Israeli Military Court Extends Detention of Palestinian Journalist

Nablus: The Israeli occupation's military court in Salem has extended the detention of 24-year-old journalist Haneen Qawareeq until next Thursday. The extension comes under allegations of 'incitement' on social media. Her lawyer has stated that no formal charges have been filed against her thus far.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner's Society reported in a joint statement that Qawareeq was initially detained on May 7. She was first transferred to Hasharon prison and later moved to Damon prison, where she is currently being held.

Qawareeq is one of more than 180 journalists detained since the start of the conflict against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. Out of these, 50 journalists remain in Israeli custody.

Since the conflict began, Israeli authorities have intensified their actions against journalists to tighten control over media coverage and enforce censorship. This escalation aims to suppress journalists' rights to freedom of expression and professional practice. Additionally, there have been ongoing reports of journalists being targeted amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
