Israeli Finance Minister Smotrich Loses Faith in Netanyahu’s Gaza Strategy

Tel Aviv: Israeli hardline far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has publicly expressed his loss of confidence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's approach to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Smotrich criticized Netanyahu's support for a "gradual plan" to take control of the enclave, advocating instead for a more immediate and aggressive military approach, along with the establishment of illegal Israeli settlements in the area.

According to TRTworld.com, Smotrich, who is known for his controversial stances, declared in a video posted on X that he had "lost faith" in Netanyahu's ability to lead the Israeli army to a decisive victory, following a recent cabinet meeting. The minister has been vocal in his opposition to any attempts to limit military actions in Gaza, arguing for continued operations to forcibly displace Palestinians in favor of settlement expansions.

The conflict in Gaza has resulted in significant loss of life and destruction. Israel's military actions have reportedly killed over 61,300 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, since 2023. The devastation has left an estimated 11,000 Palestinians buried under the rubble of destroyed homes, as reported by Palestine's official WAFA news agency. Experts believe the actual death toll may be much higher, potentially reaching around 200,000.

The ongoing situation has led to widespread destruction across the enclave, with nearly the entire population displaced. In response to these actions, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case brought before the International Court of Justice concerning its military operations in the region.
