Israeli Blockade Causes Severe Water Crisis in Gaza Amid Renewed Bombings

Gaza: Access to water, electricity, and fuel in Gaza has been severely blocked amidst a shattered ceasefire, as Israeli forces continue their bombing campaign in the Strip. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has urgently called for the restoration of the ceasefire and demanded that Israeli authorities allow the flow of electricity and entry of essential aid, including fuel, as well as water and sanitation supplies, to prevent further loss of life. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, MSF has warned that another war tactic is unfolding as Israeli authorities effectively block access to water by preventing the entry of electricity and fuel into Gaza. Paula Navarro, MSF's water and sanitation coordinator in Gaza, stated that the ongoing bombings have not only resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives but have also exacerbated the suffering by creating a severe water crisis. Many residents are forced to drink unsafe water, while others face shortages. The MSF statement emphasized the dire cons equences of running out of fuel, which would lead to the collapse of the remaining water system, cutting off access to water for millions of people in Gaza. The lack of safe water is having serious impacts on living conditions and health, with healthcare centers in Al-Mawasi and Khan Younis treating conditions like jaundice, diarrhea, and scabies, directly caused by inadequate water supply. Chiara Lodi, MSF's medical team coordinator in Gaza, highlighted the increasing number of children suffering from preventable skin diseases like scabies, which result from the inability to bathe due to the destruction and blockade. This situation is causing severe discomfort and potential infections among children. Navarro pointed out the challenges in restoring a functional water system due to restrictions by Israeli authorities. The inability to bring in new generators over 30 kilowatts has forced MSF to improvise by salvaging parts from different generators for repairs. MSF continues to call on Israeli authorities to lift the blockade, adhere to international humanitarian law, and ensure the unhindered access of aid into Gaza. On March 9, 2025, Israeli Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Eli Cohen, announced the immediate halt of electricity supply to Gaza, which had previously been limited to operating a central water station.
