Gaza Strip: An Israeli airstrike on Thursday targeted the Abu al-Ajeen area east of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of two Palestinians and injuring others. The attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in the region.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the bodies of the two civilians were transported to Shuhada Al-Aqsa Hospital following the strike, which was executed by Israeli surveillance drones. The incident is part of a larger pattern of violence that has unfolded since Israel unilaterally ended a ceasefire agreement with Gaza on March 18. Since then, a series of intense airstrikes have been carried out across the Strip, leading to substantial casualties.
The recent escalation has resulted in a death toll reaching at least 1,522 Palestinians, with 3,834 others wounded, as reported by medical sources. Emergency teams are actively working to rescue victims who remain trapped beneath the debris. Within the last day alone, hospitals in the region have received at least 40 deceased individuals and 146 injured persons.
The resumed aggression has exacerbated concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, particularly in light of the ongoing siege and restrictions on medical and humanitarian aid. Since the start of Israel's military campaign in October 2023, fatalities have escalated to 50,886 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, with 115,875 others injured. Additionally, more than 10,000 people are missing and presumed dead under the rubble.
The conflict has also led to the displacement of nearly two million residents from throughout the Gaza Strip. Most of these displaced individuals have sought refuge in Rafah, a densely populated city near the Egyptian border, marking the largest mass displacement since the 1948 Nakba.
