Jerusalem: For the 39th consecutive day, Israeli occupation authorities continue to enforce the closure of both the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, citing a 'state of emergency' and security concerns.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the closures are accompanied by strict military measures around the Al-Aqsa Mosque, including the sealing of the gates to Jerusalem's Old City. This follows an incident wherein Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Monday evening via the Mughrabi Gate, escorted by occupation forces.
The recent incursion by Ben-Gvir is part of a broader pattern of actions taken by him, marking his 14th entry into the mosque since taking office in 2023. These actions coincide with increasing calls from colonist groups to intensify their presence at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
The Israeli authorities are reportedly using the current situation to strengthen their hold over the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In response, there have been growing calls from local residents and advocacy groups to mobilize at military checkpoints and barriers in an effort to lift the imposed siege and reopen the sites.
The "Temple Mount groups" have been inciting further tensions during the Jewish Passover holiday, which runs from April 2 to April 9, by urging the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque and advocating for animal sacrifices within its premises.
Religious and official bodies have expressed concern over the prolonged closure, labeling it a violation of freedom of worship and calling for international intervention to stop these measures.
