Dublin: Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Harris expressed his discontent over Israel's continued blocking of humanitarian aid into Gaza, stating he is "deeply appalled and disgusted" by the situation. In a speech at the Ireland Global Summit 2025, he emphasized that the conflict in the Middle East is a priority for both him and the Irish government.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Harris highlighted reports from the World Food Program, which warn that food supplies in Gaza are depleting and famine poses a real threat to many residents. He stressed that "children in Gaza are dying of hunger as we speak," emphasizing the need for action to prevent further suffering.
Harris reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged for the resumption of widespread humanitarian access throughout the region. He noted that Ireland, along with its EU partners, has consistently urged Israel to fulfill its obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law.
Expressing concern over potential plans by Israel to expand its military operations in Gaza, Harris called on Tel Aviv to exercise restraint. He stressed the importance of allowing humanitarian organizations, such as UNRWA, to operate at full capacity, and he emphasized the need to address challenges facing the UN agency that threaten the integrity of the international system.
In a related context, Harris pointed out the increasing Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank, which has resulted in the displacement of at least 40,000 people over the past two decades. He affirmed Ireland's commitment to the "two-state solution" as the only viable path to achieving lasting peace and security for Israel, Palestine, and the wider region.
