Gaza: Over 150 media outlets from more than 50 countries are gearing up for a significant media campaign set for 1 September. This initiative is coordinated by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the global campaigning movement Avaaz to condemn the killings of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the campaign comes in response to recent deadly strikes by the Israeli army that resulted in the deaths of journalists in the Gaza Strip. A statement from RSF and Avaaz highlights their condemnation of these acts, calls for the protection and emergency evacuation of journalists in Gaza, and demands that foreign press be granted independent access to the area. The statement emphasizes the urgent need for world leaders to intervene and prevent further crimes against journalists. Thibaut Bruttin, Executive Director of RSF, voiced the serious concerns regarding the increasing rate of journalist fatalities in Gaza. Since 7 October 2023, over 210 Palestinian journali sts have been killed, with a significant number of these deaths occurring in recent weeks. Bruttin stresses that the continuous targeting of journalists will soon leave no one to report on the situation. The upcoming campaign on 1 September aims to mobilize global support and call for immediate action. The media operation will see participation from numerous daily newspapers and news websites across the globe, including prominent outlets like Mediapart (France), Al Jazeera (Qatar), The Independent (United Kingdom), and many others. This collective effort seeks to highlight the pressing need to protect journalists and uphold press freedom in conflict zones like Gaza. RSF has taken steps to address these issues by filing four complaints with the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes committed against journalists by the Israeli army. Additionally, RSF supports Palestinian journalists through partnerships with local organizations, providing essential material, psychological, and professional assista nce. Avaaz, which means 'voice', underscores the critical role of the media in using their platform to advocate for press freedom. The situation in Gaza, with at least 210 journalists killed and foreign press restricted, represents a direct threat to the truth and press freedom. The campaign aims to send a clear message: stop the violence against journalists, open Gaza to international media, and uphold the fundamental right to report.
