Foundation Stone Laid for Aboud Bulk Water Connection Point in Palestine: A Strategic Step Toward Water Security

Ramallah: Under the patronage and presence of H.E. Prime Minister Dr. Mohammad Mustafa, and with participation from several key figures, including H.E. Head of the Palestinian Water Authority Dr. Ziad Mimi and EU Representative in Palestine Mr. Alexander Stutzmann, the foundation stone was laid for the Bulk Water Supply Connection Points Project - Aboud Connection Point. This project is part of strategic efforts to develop the Palestinian water sector, enhance national water security, and promote sustainable development. The first phase of the project, costing 30.75 million euros, is funded by the European Union and the French Development Agency (AFD).

According to European Union, the project aims to improve the quality and reliability of water supply services in the Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governorate. It seeks to ensure fair distribution of water and enhance the efficiency of water management to meet local communities' needs equitably and sustainably. The first phase includes constructing 45 kilometers of transmission lines, two pumping stations, and two reservoirs, with an expected production capacity of approximately 25,500 cubic meters per day, benefiting about 90,000 citizens across 22 communities.

The project will increase the per capita water share to 127 liters per day in the beneficiary communities, enhance the efficiency of wholesale water management, and strengthen public trust in water services. It also aims to promote social justice by reducing disparities in water distribution and supporting economic development in various sectors. The project aligns with the Palestinian government's vision to guarantee citizens' right to safe and sustainable water, promoting equity in resource distribution as a foundation of resilience and development.

Prime Minister Dr. Mohammad Mustafa affirmed that this event is a response to the occupation, demonstrating determination to live, build, and achieve independence. He emphasized that water is a source of life, development, and resilience, thanking partners in the European Union and France for their contributions.

Dr. Ziad Al-Mimi, Head of the Water Authority, highlighted the project's alignment with strategic priorities to develop the water sector. He noted that it invests in resilience, dignity, and stability, particularly in areas affected by water scarcity. The Water Authority is also implementing major wastewater projects to address environmental and health challenges.

Dr. Laila Ghannam, Governor of Ramallah and Al-Bireh, emphasized the project's importance as a cornerstone for local development, improving citizens' daily lives. EU Representative Mr. Alexander Stutzmann and French Deputy Consul General Mr. Romain Le Floch reiterated their support for equitable and sustainable access to water.

Head of Aboud Village Council Mr. Elias Aazar expressed appreciation for the project, describing it as transformative for water services, development, and stability in benefiting villages. The project will serve various communities in the Ramallah and Al-Bireh and Salfit Governorates.

Participants concluded the ceremony by reaffirming the importance of partnerships between national institutions and international development partners to advance water infrastructure and uphold the right to water as a fundamental human right.
