Exhibition ‘Bethlehem Reborn’ Opens at Spanish Cultural Center in Mexico

Mexico city: The international exhibition 'Bethlehem Reborn. Palestine: The Wonders of the Nativity' has been inaugurated at the Centro Cultural de Espa±a en M©xico. This event introduces Mexican audiences to the story of a decade-long restoration that unveiled mosaics and historical elements within the Basilica of the Nativity, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest continuously functioning Christian places of worship.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the exhibition employs photographs, architectural documentation, scale models, and multimedia experiences to spotlight the restoration works that have revived historic parts of the church. This initiative emphasizes the importance of Palestinian cultural heritage and its role in connecting humanity to its shared past. Additionally, the exhibition showcases Palestinian embroidered thobes from George Alama's collection.

The opening ceremony was led by the Ambassador of Spain to Mexico, Juan Duarte, and the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Mexico, Nadia Rashid. They highlighted the importance of cultural heritage in fostering dialogue among peoples. Rashid delivered a message from President Mahmoud Abbas, stating that culture is a unifying force that preserves the dignity of peoples despite challenges, and expressing hope for justice and freedom.

Rashid emphasized that Bethlehem is a part of shared human heritage and that the restoration process reflects faith in the potential to restore what has been damaged.

Palestinian curator Taisir Hasboun, who has been instrumental in shaping the exhibition, presents Palestinian heritage as a living presence, encouraging audiences to view Bethlehem as a legacy that continues to belong to the world.

The opening ceremony was attended by over 300 individuals, including Mexican officials, legislative members, religious representatives, cultural figures, and members of the diplomatic corps.

The exhibition is part of an international tour that began at the Vatican in 2019, reaching over 20 cities globally and attracting more than 280,000 visitors. It serves as a platform for cultural diplomacy and the promotion of Bethlehem's heritage.

The exhibition will remain in Mexico City for two months, featuring a programme of cultural activities such as Palestinian embroidery evenings, poetry readings, film screenings, and academic discussions, before moving to other states across Mexico.
