Evidence Shows Palestinian Prisoners from Gaza Subjected to Torture Since February 2024, Reports UN Expert

Gaza: The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, Francesca Albanese, stated that "evidence shows that Palestinian prisoners from Gaza have been subjected to torture by Israeli authorities since February 2024." In her press statement on Monday, she highlighted that Israel continues to be shielded from accountability for these alleged crimes.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, The Guardian published an exclusive report revealing that Israel is detaining dozens of Palestinians from Gaza in an underground prison known as "Rakeft." The prisoners are reportedly deprived of sunlight, sufficient food, and any form of contact with their families or the outside world. This report draws on testimonies from lawyers associated with the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI), who have visited the prison and spoken with two civilian prisoners.

The report further confirmed that a significant number of those detained are civilians. It also highlighted the practice of Israeli courts extending the prisoners' detention through brief video hearings, conducted without the presence of legal representation, under the justification of "until the end of the war."
