European Trade Unions Demand EU Action on Gaza Situation

Brussels: European trade unions have urged the European Union to take immediate action regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Esther Lynch, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), along with other union leaders, addressed a letter to Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, emphasizing the urgent need for the EU to respond to Israeli actions in the region.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the letter highlighted the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza and called for the EU to impose sanctions, including the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The agreement, which is contingent on the respect for human rights and democratic principles, has come under scrutiny due to reported violations.

The unions also demanded an end to all trade and economic relations with Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, labeling them illegal under international law. The letter was signed by prominent trade union leaders from various sectors, all urging the EU to enforce a ban on the import and export of goods and services from these settlements.

The union leaders stressed the importance of the EU using its influence to achieve an immediate ceasefire and ensure unrestricted humanitarian aid access to Gaza. They criticized the limited measures taken by the EU, such as restricting Israel's participation in the Horizon Europe research program, and called for more comprehensive actions.

The unions further urged the EU to address the recent announced military operations by the Israeli government in Gaza, condemning any attempts of annexation or settlement extension as violations of international law. They called for a resolution based on a two-state solution, emphasizing the need for peace, justice, and equality for both Israeli and Palestinian civilians.
