Post: EU Criticizes Escalation of Forced Evictions in East Jerusalem

Jerusalem: The European Union Representative Office announced that the situation for Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem remains dire, highlighting the dramatic escalation of forced evictions and demolitions in the Silwan area.

According to Palestine news and Information Agency, a statement was released in agreement with EU Heads of Mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah, indicating that in the neighborhoods of Batan al Hawa and Bustan, over 50 families, totaling about 300 individuals, have been displaced from their homes in the past 18 months. Additionally, nearly 200 homes are currently facing the threat of eviction or demolition in these neighborhoods alone.

The statement reiterated the European Union's firm opposition to Israel's settlement policies and activities, particularly in and around occupied East Jerusalem, emphasizing their illegality under international law. It underscored that Israeli domestic laws do not absolve Israel from its obligations to administer the occupied territory in a manner that safeguards the local population.

The statement further cautioned that unilateral actions such as forced transfers, evictions, demolitions, and home confiscations will exacerbate the already tense environment and result in further human suffering. The European Union urged relevant Israeli authorities to cease these practices and fully adhere to their obligations under international law.
