Cairo: Egypt welcomed the recent announcement by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressing his government's intention to recognize the State of Palestine.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement describing the move as a historic step. This decision is seen as complementing international efforts to establish an independent, contiguous Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967, lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Egypt affirmed its full support for the expansion of international recognition of Palestinian statehood on the basis of the two-state solution. It emphasized that the two-state solution represents a pivotal step toward establishing a lasting, just, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. This aligns with the aspirations and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.
The statement concluded by urging all countries that have yet to recognize Palestine to take similar steps. Such recognition, it noted, would help revive the peace process and contribute to restoring peace, security, and stability across the region.
