Ramallah: Director of UNRWA Affairs for the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Roland Friedrich, has highlighted the ongoing destruction in the northern West Bank camps despite a delicate ceasefire between Israel and Iran. He noted that while regional tensions have captured attention, the demolition of dozens of buildings in these areas over the last twelve days has largely gone unnoticed.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Friedrich reported that Israeli forces continue to demolish homes and buildings in the Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams camps. He emphasized the severe impact on residents, stating that many families have been unable to salvage their belongings before the demolitions.
Friedrich described the refugee camps, which once thrived with life, as being reduced to rubble. He labeled the destruction as not just physical but as part of a systematic forced displacement, violating international law and serving as a form of collective punishment. In a post on X, he urged for immediate action, stating that residents must be allowed to return to their homes without delay.
He assured that UNRWA schools are preparing to welcome students for the upcoming academic year, and health centers are ready to provide services to patients. Friedrich called for support for Palestinian refugees to help them recover and rebuild their lives after the destruction and displacement they have faced.
