Ramallah: A Palestinian political detainee succumbed to his gunshot wounds on Monday, following an incident involving Israeli colonist militias, as reported by the Commission of Detainees' Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners' Society (PPS).
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Qusai Ibrahim Ali Rayan, 29, from Qarawat Bani Hassan, died from injuries sustained when he was shot by an armed Israeli colonist on April 15, 2026. Israeli forces detained Rayan on the same day, after which he was hospitalized at Israel's Beilinson Hospital.
The Commission and the PPS reported that the occupation authorities initially accused Rayan of attempting a stabbing attack. His detention was extended for eight days, during which his lawyer sought clarification about his critical health condition. Despite several requests, the lawyer could only see him via video conference, learning that Rayan was unconscious and on artificial ventilation.
In a subsequent court session, the court informed the Commission's lawyer that no new request to extend Rayan's detention had been made, and a decision to release him was given. However, Rayan's severe medical condition necessitated his continued hospitalization. The lawyer also noted difficulties in acquiring information about Rayan's condition, as the designated social worker had no updates to share with his family.
The Commission and the PPS asserted that the initial allegations of a planned stabbing were baseless, highlighting that, in similar cases, continued detention is typically insisted upon by the occupation prosecution. They argued that Rayan was executed based on false accusations.
The institutions remarked that this incident is part of a pattern of ongoing crimes against Palestinians, including intensified field executions in the West Bank. They noted that armed colonists have increasingly played a role in these actions, with full protection from Israeli occupation forces.
The Commission and the PPS pointed out the plight of hundreds of wounded detainees, whose numbers have risen post-genocide. They emphasized the harsh conditions and systematic abuses faced by these prisoners, framing them as another facet of the ongoing genocide.
Holding Israeli occupation authorities accountable for Rayan's death, the Commission and the PPS urged international human rights organizations to address the genocidal policies against Palestinians. They called for immediate intervention to halt the crimes against detainees in Israeli prisons.
