Al-bireh: The Central Elections Commission (CEC) convened an expanded meeting at its headquarters with chief editors, media directors, local journalists, and correspondents of Arabic channels. The meeting was part of the CEC's preparations for the local elections set for April 25, 2026.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Ashraf Shuaibi, the CEC's CEO, detailed the Decree-Law on the Election of Local Authority Councils and its amendments, reaffirming the CEC's neutrality and commitment to a participatory approach. Shuaibi highlighted the amendments aimed at enhancing participation and broadening the nomination base.
Shuaibi also addressed the ongoing preparations for the elections, citing challenges such as conditions imposed by the Israeli occupation, logistical barriers, funding issues, time constraints, and the need to raise community awareness. He emphasized the crucial role of the media in overcoming these challenges and communicating the electoral process to citizens.
Fareed Taamallah, the CEC's spokesperson, noted the media's role as a key partner in ensuring electoral success. He stressed the importance of accurate information dissemination, raising electoral awareness, and enhancing public trust in the democratic process.
The CEC shared its media and awareness plans for the upcoming period, responded to participant inquiries, and discussed media coverage issues. They also agreed to maintain open communication channels between the CEC and media organizations.
