Gaza: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): urged an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip and condemned the ongoing attacks on civilians in the Palestinian enclave, as outlined in a joint communique issued after the conclusion of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, ASEAN expressed serious concerns about the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and condemned all attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. These actions have led to a significant number of casualties, especially among women and children.
The association also criticized the continued restricted access to humanitarian aid, relief supplies, and other essential needs, which exacerbates the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
ASEAN member countries reaffirmed their support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in fulfilling its mandate. They called for the full resumption of rapid, safe, unimpeded, and sustained humanitarian access to all those in need.
The communique urged all parties involved in the conflict to protect civilians and comply with international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
Furthermore, they reiterated their longstanding support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and a homeland.
ASEAN, a regional intergovernmental organization comprising 10 Southeast Asian countries-Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam-was established in 1967.
