Post: 114 Organizations Urge EU to Suspend Agreement with Israel Over Alleged Human Rights Violations

Brussels: 114 international civil society organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have urged the European Union to suspend its Association Agreement with Israel, accusing the nation of committing genocide against Palestinians and other human rights violations.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, this call to action was made through a joint statement issued by the organizations on Monday, ahead of an EU foreign ministers' meeting to discuss the potential suspension of the Association Agreement with Israel. The organizations argue that a thorough review of the agreement should conclude that Israel has "seriously violated" the human rights clause contained within it.

Claudio Francavilla, deputy director of Human Rights Watch's EU Institutions office, expressed in a press statement that previous attempts at dialogue with Israel have largely been unsuccessful. He highlighted ongoing pro-Palestinian protests across Europe and the widespread dissemination of disturbing images and reports on social media as factors that cannot be ignored.

Francavilla underscored the necessity of following a review of the Association Agreement with tangible actions, such as suspending the trade components of the agreement. He also noted that Israeli human rights organizations have reported a low rate of punishment for those committing crimes in the West Bank, suggesting that the Israeli judicial system does not adequately address these violations.

The Association Agreement, which came into effect in 2000, serves as the legal foundation for political dialogue and economic cooperation between the European Union and Israel. The agreement's Article 2 mandates that the partnership is contingent upon a "commitment to human rights and international law."
